Love Drunk: Chapter Forty

Lainie was determined to leave Moonlight Falls and Dexter Maloney behind! After many attempts to convince her to stay, Dexter let her go. He wasn't the only one that tried to stop her from leaving, Charlotte and Roxy also gave her a stern talking to but she was not for turning! After a serious dressing down by his brother, Dexter gave it one last try and headed for the airport only to be ten minutes too late! Or was he?

The little voice echoed around the hollow building as Dexter squeezed his eyes shut, afraid to turn around in case he was wrong! "DAAAADDDEEEE!" the voice shouted again, and he turned around...

...Keira stood with her little lips trembling, tears and snot all over her face as Lainie called to him, "I couldn't go!" she wept, "I couldn't get on the plane!" Dexter felt himself rushing towards them.

"She...she said daddy!!!" Dexter spluttered, his baby girl had just said her first word!

"She didn't want to go either!" Lainie replied, "I was...I can't leave you behind Dexy, I couldn't go without you! You were right when you said we'll never be happy with anyone else!"

Dexter blinked back tears as he held his daughter tightly. "What about your dream, being a top chef?" Lainie shook her head sadly.

"None of it means anything without YOU! I want to stay, WE want to stay...with YOU...that's if..."

"...you'll still have us?"

ISLA PARADISO: FIVE YEARS LATER...

"Daddy get up!!!"

"Wha..."

"Daddy! Daddy!"

"Yeah yeah I'm comin'!"

"Jeez Lukey, can I at least have ONE morning to sleep in after 6am?"
"Come see what Kee Bee did, come on daddy!"
"Alright alright!"

"Good morning husband darling! Keira made you pancakes!"

"Oh thank you honey!"

"Welcome daddy!"

"Daddy I helped!"

"Did you Lukey? Good boy!"

"Kee Bee? Go get your brother ready while I talk to your mother okay?"

"Okay daddy, come on Luke!"

"What's up?" Lainie smiled lovingly. Dexter pulled his wife in for a hug.

"I just wanted you all to myself for a minute, is that too much to ask?" he grinned as Lainie giggled.

"Not at all! Remember you need to pick up that new keyboard for Rob before the gig this afternoon!" Dexter sighed, she was so bossy!

"I remember, now gimme a kiss to motivate me!" he pouted as she did as she was told.

"Ready daddy!" Keira called from the door.

"Okay okay! Ugh, well I suppose there's always tonight huh?"

"You think?" Lainie raised an eyebrow mockingly, "You're always knackered after a gig! It's not as easy at 40 is it?" she shoved him playfully.

"No but I'm still 18 inside!" he winked and squeezed her waist as she screeched in surprise.

"You're a bad boy Dexter Maloney!"

"Yeah you know it freckles!" he chuckled.

Dexter kissed his wife again, as his two children protested. The past five years had felt like one of his dreams, but as he tasted Lainie's lip gloss and his heart pounded with excitement over the feeling of her warm body pressed to his own...he knew this was no dream...this was real life! And it was heavenly!

"ROSIE! DAISY! BREAKFAST!!!"

"Coming daddy!"

"Andrew? Why do you insist on giving them maple syrup in the morning? You know it makes them hyperactive!" Charlotte frowned at her husband.

"Hyper like their mama you mean?" Drew winked.

"Mummy? Rosie saw Pepper eat a caterpillar on the window ledge! He's a murderer!" Daisy declared as she followed her sister into the kitchen.

"No Rosie it's called nature!" Charlotte replied in a flat tone.

Drew and Charlotte owned a farm, they had a cat sanctuary and owned a horse, it was a small but cosy farmhouse. They lived in the mansion with the rest of the band and their families during recording sessions and promotional events, but when they were taking a break, the farm was their haven. Drew sold his pet hygienator for £15,000,000 and bought the farm for Charlotte as a wedding present. Like the other band members, being in Sweet Cacophony was now a full time job. He still invented on the side, but the band was his main priority.

That day five years ago when Charlotte took the pregnancy test and agreed to marry him, Drew was complete! But when they went for their first scan and there wasn't one but TWO heartbeats, he couldn't believe his luck! Twins! These two gorgeous little girls were his world, from the moment they were born he spoiled them rotten! The only way they could tell them apart was the colour of their outfits. Rosie wore blue and Daisy wore peachy pink. "Daddy Daisy pulled my pigtail and it hurt!" Rosie pouted.
"I did NOT! Big fibber!" Daisy stuck out her tongue.

"Girls, enough! Sit down and eat your waffles!" Drew growled as Charlotte sighed impatiently.
"Andrew they're children, don't scold them so!" Her big brown eyes melted his heart as he softened and apologised to the girls.

"Mummy can we go to Keira's to play today?" Rosie asked innocently as Daisy groaned.
"Ugh daddy you burned the waffles again!"
"Only if auntie Lainie says it's alright, although I think she has a little get together planned for after the Summer Fest!" The girls were best friends with Keira despite being a year younger. And Rosie loved to play with Keira's little brother Luke, she thought he was cute and he liked cuddles!

Drew looked at his wife and smiled. Life was good, it would be even better if they could eventually have a son! Charlotte could obviously read his mind as she smiled too. "Maybe some day the girls would like a...brother?" she winked.

As Drew pulled her in for a kiss!

Roxy Hayes was feeling rather uncomfortable. She was expecting her third baby and she was four days overdue! As she watched her husband play with their four year old son Joshua and their three year old son Cormac, Roxy wanted so badly to get this baby out!

Matthew was hoping for a girl. After they lost Molly over five years ago, he'd been looking forward to spoiling a little princess. But when Joshua was born he didn't complain! He was delighted with his little clone!

Roxy fell pregnant rather quickly after that and Cormac eventually came into their lives, albeit rather traumatically. Roxy had a very difficult birth with little Cormy. It took them three years to try again.

Even though she had temporarily stepped down as keyboard player in the band, she still lived in the mansion with Lainie and Dexter. Lainie wanted to be there for her best friend after the last pregnancy was so scary. Dexter was fully in agreement, being Roxy's protector since Paris five years ago!

As Dexter appeared in the nursery, Roxy got out of her rocking chair to greet him. "Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know that the limo is picking us up at around 3pm okay?" Dexter smiled at Roxy's swelling belly.

"Thanks Dexy, but I think I might stay here with the kids if you don't mind? I feel huge and my ankles are throbbing! They feel like they're on fire! But I'm sure Matty will come!" Matthew frowned and shook his head.

"Not without you babe! What if the baby comes?"
Dexter continued to smile and agreed, 
"Matt should totally be here with you, just in case!"

In the room he shared with his young wife in the mansion, Dexter's older brother Ashton waited for her to get out of the shower. He and Erin had been married for four years and they were blissfully happy in their lovely home. The only thing was, they had been trying for a baby since their honeymoon and it just wasn't happening. They watched Lainie fall pregnant with Luke and Charlotte and Drew have their twins, even Roxy and Matt had Joshua and Cormac within a very short time of each other...but Erin still couldn't get pregnant. They had done every test medically possible, tried every position, every method! And Ash so wanted to be a dad! He was content with his niece and nephew but deep down he wanted his own child to raise and love! But after three years, they accepted that it wasn't going to happen and made peace with it.

"So what time will you be home?" Erin called to him.

"I dunno, it's the Summer Fest at the park, we're the main act so..."

"Because I wanted to...there's something we need to discuss before Lainie's barbecue!"

"Oh yes?" Ash grew worried, was she bored of him? Did she want a divorce? After all he was now 42 and she was 27, he always worried that she would find a younger man and run for the hills! But she was still here with him, despite failing to fall pregnant. Ash thought it might be him, being older and after all the crazy things he did when he was a firefighter, inhaling all sorts of fumes and smoke, jumping from buildings, climbing trees...

Erin looked at him with an apprehensive expression, "Ash? You know how we were trying for a baby for...well ever?"

"Of course I do!" he sighed, feeling like he'd failed her.

"Well..." she frowned, "I think it's time that we...forgot all that and put a line under it!" Ash's heart skipped a beat.

"Erin..."

"Because...I went to the doctors last week and..." Ash looked at her in horror, had the doctor told her something bad? Was it truly hopeless? Was she ill???

"...I'm 13 weeks gone! Ash we're going to have a baby!" Ash felt his jaw hit the floor.

"Wha...I'm...it WORKS???" he could hardly believe it! "I'm going to be a daddy???"

Erin giggled, "Yes my big hunky drummer you are!" 

He jumped up and pulled her towards him, planting a huge kiss on her lips. He was going to be a father, after all this time!!!

"I was so scared you wanted to leave!" he cried.

"Why would I want to leave? You're the only guy for me Ash, always have been the only guy! We're happy aren't we? And now we are in heaven because we're having a baby!" she beamed.

"I love you Mrs Maloney!" 

Erin giggled again, she loved it when he called her that, it reminded her that she was his and his alone! "I love you too, my superstar!"

The Summer Fest gig went well. Rob was fitting in nicely with the band but they couldn't wait to have their bossy chick back. Roxy was sorely missed by all the boys! After they stood and took a bow, Dexter had only one thing on his mind as usual after a gig...his family! As he spotted them in the back waiting for him, his heart pounded with excitement at the thought of being with them. Kee Bee, Luke and his freckles were his world and he would happily give up the band just to be with his family.

"Hey there pretty mama!"
"Hello there pretty daddy!" Lainie giggled as Dexter frowned at her.
"I'm not pretty freckles!" he pouted, "I'm ruggedly handsome!"

"Daddy you were amazeballs!" Keira gushed as he picked her up playfully and scolded her as she screeched happily.
"Kee Bee don't say balls to your father it's...wrong!" Luke giggled at his feet and started singing the word balls over and over.

"And you young man..." Dexter put Keira down and grabbed hold of his cheeky four year old son, "...you're a chip off the old block I'm ashamed to say!" he laughed softly and snuggled him.
"Ballsballsballsballs..." Luke continued to chant over a bubbly giggle.

A lot had happened in five years. Sweet Cacophony were one of the biggest rock bands around and Roxy and the boys struggled to live a normal life without being recognised. But the mansion they all shared was a hideaway, security gates and security men kept the excited fans at bay for the sake of the band members' children.

Keira, being the oldest was always in charge of the others when there was a new album to work on, or any other band business. She loved playing with Joshua and called him chubby chops constantly. He was only four but he didn't like it, Keira was the loveliest girl he'd ever known and it hurt when she teased him.

"We should start a band!" Daisy announced that day as Keira gave her one of her raised eyebrows, a look she inherited from her father.
"You what?" was all she could reply.
"Well, we're the spawn of rock royalty!" she nodded as Keira let out a screech of a laugh and Rosie stifled a giggle.

"What's so funny?" Daisy frowned as the toddlers all giggled along with the older girls.
"Daisy? I'm not going to be in a band!" Keira wrinkled her nose, "I'm going to be an actress!!!" and now it was Daisy's turn to laugh.

"Kee, your dad will NEVER allow that!" she scoffed.
"And why not?" Keira folded her arms and huffed.
"Because actresses end up taking drugs and puking up their food to stay thin, mum told me!" Rosie blinked and punched her twin sister's arm.
"Daisy, she did not! She was referring to one particular actress in an article!" she rolled her eyes and sighed.

"Well I wanna be a rock star like daddy!" Luke piped up as Joshua giggled and clapped his hands.
"Lukey, daddy will never allow THAT! I will be an actress, but you will never be a rock star, sorry!" Keira shrugged as her brother's tiny bottom lip trembled and Joshua ceased giggling.

Rosie rushed to him and hugged him affectionately, "It's okay Lukey wooky!" she could feel his tiny body wracked with sobs as Keira let out an impatient growl.
"Oh for the love of...Rosie don't baby him! He's four!"

"KIDS! TIME TO EAT!!!" Drew's voice called over to them.
"Let's go!" Keira ordered and they all headed towards the adults.

"So we have a bit of news!" Ash piped up as they waited for the children to join them.
"Oh? Spill big bro!" Dexter smiled curiously as Ash grinned from ear to ear.

"Well...Erin and I are gonna have a baby!" he gushed as Dexter grabbed hold of him and gave him the biggest and warmest hug.

"Oh my god! Congrats you two! Man this has been a loooong time comin'!" he could feel tears sting his eyes, so happy for his older brother and knowing just how badly he had wanted a child of his own for so long. 

"How far gone?" Erin smiled and exclaimed proudly,
"Thirteen weeks!"

Lainie hugged Erin happily but there seemed to be a sadness behind her joy. 

"What's up big sis?" Erin looked her in the eye, knowing there was something not right.
"Oh...I..." Lainie began.

"Come on, we're family!" Erin nudged her softly.
"Okay...well..." Lainie looked at her husband as he gulped nervously. "I didn't want to steal your thunder sis but..." Dexter's eyes were like saucers.

"...I'm kinda pregnant too! Around twelve weeks? So our babies are going to be very close cousins!" she announced in almost a whisper as Dexter replied a little too loudly,
"AGAIN???" and Ash and Drew chuckled as Dexter kissed Lainie with excitement.

"Good goin' little bro! Erin was right all those years ago, you've got pretty darn good little swimmers there!"

Dexter let her go as the children finally appeared and Roxy called over, "Well sorry to rain on your baby shower guys but..." she pointed down to a puddle at her feet...

"...I have a leak in my umbrella!"

"Ohmygod!!!" Matthew panicked as Lainie rushed to her friend's side.

"Finally baby Hayes makes an appearance! Dexy go get the car!" Their evening barbecue had been postponed as Roxy endured a painful and lengthy labour. Ash, Erin, Drew and Charlotte all stayed home to watch the children as Dex and Lainie went with Matthew and Roxy. Finally Roxy gave birth to her third son...

...who she and Matthew named Rory Dexter Hayes. Lainie watched Dexter gush over the newborn in anticipation of their own baby coming, their third child too. "Hello there Rory, boy are you gunna have great friends huh? My kid and Ashton's kid! Triplets hehe!" he laughed softly and swayed the baby gently from side to side.

As they headed to their room, Lainie stopped just at the door and pulled her husband aside. "Dexy? You are happy about this baby?" Dexter gave her one of his looks, one that made her feel like her question was a stupid one.

"Freckles, I'm over the moon! We have two amazing kiddies already. To add to that would just be wonderful! And I'm so happy that Ash's kid gets to grow up with our kid!"

"You are?" she sniffed.
"Come 'ere you!" he pulled her in for a hug.
"Dexy I love you, you know that right?" Dexter laughed and rubbed his stubbly chin in her hair.
"I kinda got that impression yeah!"

"Because I feel I don't tell you enough, and you really need to know how much I love you because...as long as you know!" 

"I do! You keep poppin' out my babies and you're still here after all this time so...those things gave me a clue and..."
"And what?"

"And if you didn't love me, I'd die! And I'm still alive so..." she gave him a playful thump as they kissed, and she left him standing in their living room.

"Yeah you love me, you've always loved me!" he smiled to himself as he thought about that first day, their hands touching.

So much had happened since then, so many missed chances. What would really have happened if he'd spoken up that day? Would Keira have come along sooner? Who knew! All that mattered was that he and Lainie were together now, married and parents of two beautiful children with another on the way.

Dexter William Maloney was grateful for that one touch all those years ago, that touch that meant Evelyn Dawn Robertson had captured his heart and he was right, he was never the same again...

...he was finally happy!
