Hello to all who read Other Sides of the World! For those of you who've ever wondered what the characters look like, I've gone and created them! Yep I have! I intend to make the big hotel at some point as well, when I'm in the mood. So let me introduce you to the people in my twisted head...
This is Rhona Boyle, as I imagine her! She's got the Boyle red hair and her mother's blue eyes. She's 28 years of age and she's just returned to her home town of Tavish Brig after living in Glasgow for over a year. Tavish Brig was the home of the Boyle family for hundreds of years and the hotel her parents inherited goes back to the 1700s. The Boyles were the Lairds of Tavish Brig and owners of Loch Tavish by the big house. Rhona was engaged to her high school boyfriend, Jamie McGregor, who took her to Glasgow to live with him after he got a job with an advertising company. Not long after they moved there, Jamie began an affair with Rachel O'Dowd, the Irish barmaid of his local pub. Rhona eventually moved back home feeling heartbroken. Little did she know she would meet a handsome American who would love her and cherish her, for as long as he lived!
Meet Oswald Truman, or Oz as he likes to be known. He's 35 years old and he appears in the hotel from nowhere on the same day Rhona returns from Glasgow. Rhona's older brother Lachie instantly dislikes him, he's American and Lachie had a bad experience when he went to America. Oz is handsome, clever, funny, he has beautiful blue eyes, only problem is that Oz says he's dying. He doesn't know how long he has left, he won't even tell anyone what's wrong. Oz's whole presence is shrouded in mystery but he is an honest, genuine person. He rescues Rhona from drowning one night and from that moment on he's crazy about her. Why does Oz trivialise his predicament and why won't he tell anyone exactly what's going on with his life? All he wants is Rhona, he said it himself, but are things really that simple?
This is Lachlan Boyle, known as Lachie to everyone. He's 33 years old and he's Rhona's big, strong, overprotective brother. Lachie takes after his father in looks and build, he has his eyes but inherited his mother's brown hair. Despite being a powerful young man, Lachie has a soft side and his love for his wee sister is admirable as well as tiring. Sometimes Lachie can be too loving and put people off Rhona, that was his intention when Oz started showing an interest in her, he did not like the young American at first. Soon Lachie realised that Oz was a good man worthy of his sister, he is now very much for their coupling. Another part of Lachie's life is Elspeth McDade, he's always liked her since she came to work at the hotel all the way from Dundee. He likes her accent and he would love to spend more time with her. Luckily that looks like a possibility since her birthday party, the two seem to get along rather nicely.
Hamish and Annie Boyle have been married for 38 years and are still as much in love as they were on their wedding day. Annie was 18 when she met Hamish, the young Laird of 23, and her parents were dead against their relationship. They married a year later and her father never spoke to her again, although her mother did get to know the children when they were born her father never made the effort. He died when Lachie was 5 and Rhona was a baby. After Jamie broke Rhona's heart, Hamish had a group of local lads ready to head up to Glasgow and deal with him, but his wife stopped him before he did something he would regret. They got their daughter back, that was the main thing, however damaged she was. Annie hopes Oz will put all of her broken pieces back together, she likes him very much and wouldn't mind having a young man like him as a son-in-law. Hamish on the other hand is very fond of Oz, but doesn't want his little girl to get hurt again. They are a loving couple, both to each other and to their family!
Agnes Douglas and Mary Boyle are sisters, cousins of Hamish. They both work in the hotel in the kitchen, Mary since she was 16 and Agnes since her son took over their farm. Mary has never married, Agnes was happily married but her husband was tragically killed in an accident during the storm of 1977. Agnes has a son, Fergus, and two grandsons, Archie and Alfie. They bicker like sisters do but they're also very close and protective of each other. Rhona calls them her Aunts and they have looked out for her since she was a little girl. Family is an important part in Rhona's life, and her Aunts are very special to her!
Elspeth McDade is from Dundee, she came to work at the hotel while stopping through on her way to Glasgow but never got there. She's a chambermaid and she is also the object of Lachie's affections. She has an odd personality, she refers to herself as a "misfit", she likes hard rock music and would love a tattoo. But Lachie adores her, despite her fierce demeanour, he wants to be with her no matter what!
Hannah Peters is also a chambermaid who works at the hotel, she is rather grumpy and speaks her mind. If she doesn't like someone, they certainly will know about it. She dislikes Oz for some reason, possibly because he's attracted to Rhona and Hannah remembers how badly she was hurt by Jamie. She and Rhona were in the same class together growing up along with Terry Warren.
Terry Warren has loved Rhona Boyle since 2nd year of high school, but she chose Jamie McGregor instead! Although it hurt to be cast aside, Terry remained a loyal friend and even took a job at the hotel when he left school, just to be near her. He likes Oz, wishes he was him, but he hopes Rhona can finally be happy. After all that's all he wants for her in the end.
And finally, this is Jamie McGregor. He was the one who let Rhona go, broke her heart and left her for someone else. He is very different from Oz as you can see. Terry and his friends used to call him Jamie "the rat" McGregor because he resembled a rodent. Rhona loved him regardless and for some reason he seemed to be a ladies man!
So that's the characters! Are they how you imagined? Chapter six should be out soon, byeeee! ;)
