These Twin Souls: Chapter Two

Chapter Two
Nothing Has Changed

I looked purposely at her as her hair blew gently in the wind. She smiled slightly and waved, turned her back on me and entered her family home. I waited for her to come to me, five whole hours, and then I went to bed. I was up at 5am that morning, my body clock was wired that way for work. I slowly headed downstairs as Ben's snoring echoed around the house, I looked out of my living room window into the darkness of the street, only the street lights glowing as the Marsh house looked like a black cloud was smothering it. What an apt look, we were all devastated over Denny, there were clouds covering all of our hearts! I thought of my sweet Verona sleeping in her old bed for the first time in years. I thought about her faint smile and the way her hair blew in the breeze, how she hadn't changed much since she was a baby...those blue eyes still brought me to my knees! I was more than a little hurt that she didn't come over and say hello, not even for a couple of minutes, but I guessed her parents were her priority over me and so they should have been!

These Twin Souls: Chapter One

Chapter One
Homecoming

"Why would you even do that???" My voice was shrill, it grated on me nevermind what it was doing to Ben as he stood with his head hung towards the ground. I could hear his little sobs and sniffles and it made disciplining him all the more painful. "Ben you really need to stop this!" I sighed in frustration, his body shook with every sob, his fingers twitched as he wrung his hands.
"They called me a freak again Ry! What am I supposed to do?" His eyes looked up at me, wet and pleading.
"You're going to the big school after the summer! You need to man up!" What was I saying? I wouldn't let Verona go through this crap when she was his age and she wasn't even my flesh and blood! I looked down at my brother for a moment and my heart wanted to break. He was only twelve, he'd lost both his parents and now he was stuck with a jacka$$ like me! I worked twelve hour shifts most days and when I wasn't working I was trying to pay the bills and keep the house clean. Denny wrote regularly and was always nagging me to find myself a wife, I already had found my one and only but she was finishing her first year of university and had forgotten all about me!
"If you'd just give Natalie a chance Ry! I really like her, and she keeps asking you out!" Natalie Carter was the receptionist and secretary at the garage, Ben was right, she did keep asking me out. She was blonde, had legs to die for and she was beautiful but I wasn't interested. All I wanted was my sweet Verona!

These Twin Souls: Prologue

Prologue:

My dearest Verona,
I remember the day you were born, it was a Saturday and Denny was so excited. He wanted you to be a boy, I wanted to play Pacman but we just couldn't focus! My parents were watching Denny while your parents headed to the hospital, and when we were finally allowed to visit he ran down the corridor of the maternity ward as if Hulk Hogan was at the other end, so desperate to meet you. The first time I laid eyes on you was when you were lying in your little cot next to your mother, you were so tiny. I was staring at you with the biggest grin on my face, Denny was huffing because you were a girl! Your mum called over to me, did I want to hold you? And at that moment I felt the most overwhelming burst of love, I wanted so badly to hold you, I was an eight year old boy and all I wanted to do at that moment was hold a baby, not just any baby...YOU! From that moment on I spent all of my spare time with you, I fed and changed you, I took you out in your pram, I played with you! Denny couldn't understand why, and neither could I! All I knew was I had to be with you, I had to have you near me! And my feelings have never changed, they never will! As I watch you load your car, I know I'll never see you again! You're off to the big city to make a name for yourself, and quite right too! Do all of the things I could never do, live your life! But always know that I will be there for you if you ever need me, always!
All my love, Ry xxx

Other Sides of the World! Chapter Ten: Waiting.

Previous Chapters:
Chapter Eight: Nuptials
Chapter Nine: Tragedy.

Waiting, when it's a matter of life and death, can drive you utterly mad if you let it. It feels like forever when someone's life is on the line! Sitting in a white corridor, the smell of chemicals and the breakfast from the cafeteria downstairs lingered in the air. Rhona Boyle looked down at her light pink dress, Oz's dried blood soaked into it, and at that moment she realised the dress was ruined. There was no way that blood was coming out, what a thing to think about at a time like this! But sometimes you just had to steer your mind away from the fact that the man you loved was lying on a table being operated on at that very moment! The waiting was bad enough, but Lachie's pacing was irritating her, she wanted to hit him and that wasn't fair because the person who really did deserve a good smack in the face was Jamie! "Whit the hell urr they dayin' in there!!!" Lachie growled and threw himself down on the chair beside her, biting his nails and grunting to himself. Rhona couldn't get the picture of the Landrover disappearing from view out of her mind, and her mother grabbing her and dragging her into the family car to follow them. She also couldn't get the sight of Oz lying on the ground covered in blood and looking like death out of her mind either!

"Next please!" Helen Andrews called to Rhona as she stood in the queue at the Post Office. "NEXT PLEASE!!!" she repeated a little louder. "Rhona Boyle are you in this queue or not?" she barked as Rhona shook herself out of the daydream she was basking in.
"Sorry Helen, I was miles away!" she smiled and approached the desk.
"So I see!" Helen frowned impatiently at her. "What can I do for you then?" her manner was always very terse so Rhona did not take offence at her tone.
"I want to send this card to California!" she beamed, it was Oz's mother's birthday and Rhona thought it would be a nice thought to send her a birthday card from Scotland.
"Well pop it on the scales then!" Helen pointed a bony finger towards them as Rhona obliged. After tapping away at her keyboard for a moment, she looked up with a sneer and said "First class will be £2.34!"
"WHAT?" Rhona's eyes grew wide. "For a wee card like that???" Helen closed her eyes and pursed her lips before replying in a shrill tone,
"Rhona it's no the size, it's the weight!"
"Aye but still!"
"Do you want to send it second class? Because that'll be £1.59!" Rhona thought for a moment then shook her head.

"Quit squirming about Lachie!" Rhona scolded as she tugged his tie into place and tucked it inside his waistcoat.
"Am nervous awright?" he replied shrilly and adjusted what good work his sister had just done.
"LACHIE I just did that!!!" she rolled her eyes and crossed her arms.
"A know but it wiz too tight!" Oz appeared walking oddly, he'd never worn a kilt before and it was an experience to say the least.
"Hey guys!" he grunted as he fiddled with the belt on his kilt. "Please can I wear my boxers?" he whined as Rhona gave her brother a disapproving frown.
"Och Lachie you never made him go commando! That's just not right!"
"It's tradition!" Lachie defended his actions, "A true Scotsman wears nothin' under the kilt!"
"But Lachie Oz is American! These rules do not apply! Oz sweetheart you can wear your boxers if you want!" Rhona smiled sweetly at him and lunged forward, grabbing his kilt she tried to pull it up and peek underneath as they both began to tug at it.
