Love Drunk: Chapter Twenty Seven

Things were going well for Dexter and Lainie, baby Keira was settling in fine and they seemed to be making a happy little family until Alex put a spanner in the works! Turning up at the door demanding a DNA test, he and Dexter almost came to blows once again had it not been for Keira being present. Now they have to wait for the results and Dexter's worst fear...that Keira might not be his daughter!

It had been a tough four days! First Alex showed up wanting a DNA test to prove he was Keira's father, then Drew's grandfather died of pneumonia. Dexter felt bad that he'd not been there for his best friend when he needed him the most, so the least he could do was help him arrange the funeral.

Keira was napping in her swing as the two best friends sat down and had a proper chat, something they hadn't done in a while. "So what about er...some kind of music?"
"I dunno, there was this one song that he loved. He would ask me to play it on the guitar all the time! In fact the first time he met Char I played it for him on my first guitar, remember the one my mum bought me before she died?" Dex smiled at the thought of that guitar, he remembered alright!

"I was so jealous! That was an awesome guitar!" He chuckled softly.
"Old Winston still had it in his room at the care home! He kept it all this time!" Drew felt a tear run down his cheek. "I know he was old, I know I'm supposed to feel blessed that I had my gramps well into my thirties, but...it still hurts you know?" Dex patted his friend on the shoulder.
"I know! You have a right to grieve Drew! He was the closest thing to a father you ever had!"

Drew smiled and turned to Dex, "Yeah, but your dad came a close second! You never knew how lucky your were Dex!"
"Oh I knew, I just hope dad knew that I knew if you get what I mean!"

"You were his pride and joy! Yeah Ash was the one he boasted about, his son the hero firefighter! But you were...the artist! I remember when you took off, me and Ash had to go with your mum to his office and clear it out. The walls were covered in your paintings from when you were tiny up to that moment! He displayed your art like it was Picasso or Monet!"

Dex never knew this, and it warmed his heart to find out. "Your mum just cried her eyes out when we had to take them down, she said he always told his clients his boy was an artist and he was going to be famous one day. He would bore them to tears pointing at every one and telling them when and where you painted them!" Drew laughed and shook his head.

Dexter felt the urge to cry too, those six months he spent away from his friends and family just to forget his father's death. It didn't work!

When Dexter arrived in Bridgeport, he had no money and no job. Meeting Della at that bar, she was rather taken with him and took him home. He was young, he was good looking and in her words...

"Baby your skin is flawless!!!" Yes Della Watkins had taken quite a shine to Dexter and put him up in her flat, she gave him a job and much more. "How old are you baby?"
"Twenty four!" She let out a booming laugh.
"Come on baby, your real age! You can tell old Della!"

Dexter blushed and looked her straight in the eyes, "I'm telling you the truth, twenty four!"
"Wow!" She gave him an impressed grin, "You sure don't look it baby, you're old enough to work behind a bar then, that's good!"

Over the next couple of months, Dexter began a physical relationship with the forty four year old Della despite the fact that she was old enough to be his mother. Sometimes she would let him keep his rent money for another type of payment altogether.

He'd had a few girlfriends at university so experience wasn't an issue. He got what he wanted and so did she, but the relationship turned sour when he took the strip-a-gram job!

She threw him out of her flat and told him never to come back! Luckily though Steph came along at the right time. She lived next door to Della and they weren't exactly best buddies so it amused her to take Dexter in!

She was a tattoo artist and gave Dexter his first tattoo. She was rather taken with him as Della was! "You're my blank canvas...and I'm going to make you a masterpiece!" she purred to him.

Moving in with Steph, Dexter received a few more tattoos. It was foreplay to her, she liked to inflict a little pain on him and he liked it.

She would draw blood every time, just to hear him groan in pain.

She would ink him, and he would pay her back the same way he used to pay Della. But in the back of his mind, the one thing he wanted to forget by doing all of these things was still there...

...and despite the pain, despite the pleasure, it wasn't going away any time soon! Steph was an amazing girl, albeit a little sadistic and wild, but he just couldn't settle in the city!

One night when he was working, something hit him...

...this wasn't how he wanted his life to be!

Getting on a bus back to Moonlight Falls, he downed the bottle of whiskey in his bag. Arriving back home extremely drunk, he had broken into the family home as he couldn't find his key.

Ash had caught him, thinking he was a burglar. "Dexter???"
"Shh, don't shout!"
"What the hell do you think you're doing???" Ash looked furious.
"Welcome home Dexter! Psh, good to see you too brother!"

"Dexter are you...are you DRUNK?"
"You know what?" Dexter gave his brother a dirty look, "F%$& you!!!"

Dexter didn't remember taking his dad's car in the middle of the night. He didn't remember telling his mother she was a stupid b*tch. He didn't remember crashing the car into the bridge...

...but he did remember the severe beating his brother and best friend gave him, breaking his bones and battering him black and blue!

Dex snapped back to the present. He hoped that Keira and Lainie would never know what a jerk he had once been. The three most important women in his life were his mother, his daughter and his freckles! He would do anything in his power to protect them from guys like him, the way he used to be!

As he and Drew were still chatting, Lainie came in laughing with someone.
"Dexy!" She smiled.

Behind her was David Green, the delivery guy who moved to Lucky Palms! "Hi Dexter!" He waved to him cheerily.

Dexter got up and greeted him, "Hey David, how's it going? How's the magic show?" David sighed and laughed,
"Not as magic as I expected! Fortunately my parents are letting me stay with them for a while until I find another place."
"So you're back then?" Lainie interrupted their catch up...

"Here she is!" She gushed as she held Keira in her arms.
"Oh wow!" David smiled, "You're a mummy! And she's beautiful! Takes after her dad, she's got your colouring Dexter!" Dexter's heart throbbed with that yearning he'd had since Lainie told him she was pregnant.

"Actually..." Dex began as Lainie finished the sentence for him.
"Yeah there's a slight chance that another man is her father."
"Oh, sorry." David frowned sympathetically to Dex, "But hey, I knew you two would get together eventually! You make a really lovely couple!" Lainie's cheeks grew hot and and she stammered,
"Oh, oh no! We...we're not together David. No no no!"

Dexter's heart couldn't take any more battering as her words made him want to curl up into a ball and just die! "Oh right." David gave her a confused smile, pretending to understand the arrangement. "So you're single?"
"Yes, very much so!" Yep, Dexter wanted to die!

"So who's the other guy?"
"A mistake, we're just hoping and praying she's Dexy's. We're still waiting for the DNA test. It's...oh David it really is awful!"

"I'm sorry Lainie, it must be tough. Look I know you only gave birth a few weeks ago but...if you want to let your hair down and just talk to someone...I'm here and...we could go for a drink or something?" Dexter wanted to cry!

"That would be lovely David. I'd really like that." Dexter felt déjà vu, Lainie was choosing someone else over him again! He was here, he was loving her every day!

He was giving her every part of him every day!!! Every part that she would take! Because he would give her his soul if she asked! He would give her every last piece of his soul because she already had his heart! That was gone! Why couldn't she see him???

Drew saw how much it was hurting him...

...when he went up to see Charlotte, who was taking Winston's death rather badly, he tried to take her mind off of the funeral by telling her about David's return. "So now she's going out with him tonight and Dex is babysitting!" He shook his head in disbelief.
"Well he is a nice man Andrew. Lainie liked him very much, when he left she was very upset!"

"Yeah but...look at Dex! He might be the father of her baby and he dotes on the pair of them, heck he acts like her husband minus the er...you know the..."
"The intimacy Andrew?" Charlotte giggled quietly at his bashfulness.
"Ya, they're not having the woo hoo. But they were made for each other!" He growled a little and balled his fists. "Why can't they just..."

"Andrew, what will be will be!" She gave him a hug. "Now, how did you and Dexter get on with the funeral arrangements?"

Dexter spent the evening with Keira as Lainie and David went on their "date". He wondered how things would change if he turned out to be the father, would Lainie finally see him the way he wished she would? What if he wasn't the father? Would David adopt Keira? Would she and David get together officially this time and leave Dex out in the cold? Would he ever get to be with Keira again?

When Lainie finally got in that night, she was beaming from ear to ear. It seemed that she and David had rekindled their romance from before. "Oh Dexy!" She breathed, "Isn't David just so sweet?"
"Yeah, he's a good guy freckles!"
"I think he's just what I've been needing to put my mind off things. If only you..." Dex gave her a look of utter horror.
"Freckles I'm not remotely interested in anyone else, my priority is you and Keira!"

Lainie smiled and fell into his arms, his heart beat a little faster as he felt her body pressed to his. She pulled back and draped one arm over his shoulder. "But Dexy you're such a beautiful boy, some lucky girl should have the pleasure of...well you because you're just...that night in the lift? Wow!" She sighed and ran her finger down his cheek as he struggled to breathe.

It hurt to think about their special night, knowing it would never be repeated. He'd had many girls, but Lainie was so special...she was the one! Nobody else would ever compare! And what was this all about? Why was she doing this to him? Touching him like that! Making him want her even more!

It made him wonder, even though David was a good guy he wasn't right for her! He wanted to scream "I'm the one freckles! I'm the one you're meant to be with!!!" But his mouth was numb with the sensation of her touch as she yawned and announced "I need my bed Dexy! Goodnight my pretty boy!"

He stood alone in the darkness, wanting so much to go into her room and tell her to stop messing around and just be with him! No, he would wait! He'd wait for the test results because if Keira was his daughter, there was more of a chance for him then!

The annoying young man was in the diner again. Roxy pretended they had never met and asked to take his order. "Oh hey there gorgeous!" He smiled at her. "One veggie lasagne please, unless you would like to join me?"
"I'm working!" She smiled with difficulty.

"Maybe next time, my treat! So..." Roxy sighed with boredom, this guy just wouldn't give up. "...what will it take to win your heart, oh fair maiden?" He winked.

"I don't want to be rude but I'm trying to work here!" She snapped and walked away as he shouted after her.

"So am I! And you're hard work I tell ya!" He laughed as she could barely conceal her smile.

Ash and Erin were spending more time with each other while he awaited the results of the paternity test. He found her comforting and she found it enjoyable comforting him. Hugs and kisses were underrated, and somehow she was content with just that! Right now it was all the intimacy she needed with her big butch drumming firefighter!

"So when do you get the results?" She rubbed her nose with his.
"End of the week. Feels like the end of the century, it just drags on!"
"I just know she's Dexter's!" Erin smiled and brushed her lips on his.

"Erin!" Ash winced as she giggled sweetly.
"Aww come on tough guy you can take it!" She stopped teasing him, "I love you, whether you're an uncle or not!"
"Yeah, I...well you know!" He kissed her forehead as she giggled again.

"Yeah I do, but someday you'll say it and I'll faint!"

Friday came by slowly for the gang, as the band were practicing for a gig in the boys' flat. In the middle of their rehearsal, Lainie came bursting in out of breath and looking utterly terrified.

"Freckles???" Dexter raced towards her in a panic, "Is Keira okay???" Lainie struggled to speak as she flapped a letter up and down.
"Oh no!" Roxy muttered.

It was the results, the identity of Keira's father was in in that envelope!!!

Dun dun duuuuhn! Who is it? Well you'll find out next chapter because I'm evil! Hehe! ;)
